"A primary way in which a microbe is transmitted is direct contact. This is particularly true if the transfer of even very low number of microbes can initiate an infection. For example, the infectious dose of Shigella specie which are intestinal pathogens is approximately 10-100 cells, a number easily passed when shaking hands, once on the hand the organism can inadvertently be ingested (Fecal oral route). Therefore, regular hand washing is important in preventing the spread of this type of disease.
